Matthew shakes the tournament landscape as they grab their first win against Luke. Matthew displayed their new found chemistry as they outdueled Luke and more importantly kept their claim to the twice to beat advantage alive. With their win, Matthew instantly made the tournament more interesting as uncertainty emerged in the team standings. Roblo shined in his 2nd game in the green uniform as he led his team from start to finish. He was not alone as Matthew got different contributions from different players across the board. The first half was a back and forth as both superstars Mario Gayeta and Vic Lardizabal opted for secondary roles offensively. Spitfire guard Lloyd Duga-duga took the reins for Luke as he scored all over the floor. He was however plagued by early foul trouble. Roblo took center stage as he punished Luke inside with straight line drives and trips to the line. Luke however finished the first half strong as they led 26-18. Matthew took the halftime break as a reset button as they came off the stoppage strong, sporting a 9-0 run to grab the lead 27-26. Roblo continued to score inside while The Tank Lardizabal became aggressive offensively sensing their big chance to break through with a win. Gayeta also came up big as he kept his team fighting until the very end. The big turnaround came when Duga-duga fouled out of the game very early in the second half. Matthew took advantage and built a comfortable cushion. Luke kept coming anchored by their main man Gayeta. It was just not enough to weather the storm of Roblo and Lardizabal. The Tank capped off the game with an and-one play finishing with 14 points. Roblo scored 26 points to lead all scorers. Gayeta scored most of his 20 points in the 2nd half for Luke. Duga-duga sizzled with 5 triples to finish with 20 points before his night was cut short by foul trouble. Mark shows nerves of steel as they hand John their first loss of the tournament. Mark quickly learned from a hard fought loss against Luke in their last game. Faced with another slugfest, they came out winning this time against none other than the league leading John. It took an extra period but the payoff was surely more satisfying as it was tiring. Both teams treated the fans in the sidelines with an absolute thriller deserving of their cheers and dedication. Mark came out guns ablazing as they displayed their well oiled offense centered around their in-out tandem of Ezekiel Aguinaldo and Ponciano Tan. They passed the ball smoothly, finding the open man for easy baskets. Do-it-all-guard Marlito Gotonero meshed well with the motion offense as he found ways to score from the wings. Superstar AC Gonzales kept the offense running for John alongside guard Apollos Aguinaldo who chucked 2 triples. Mark finished the first half leading by 5, 38-33. Mark took advantage of John’s big man Rey Malupa fouling out early and continued to look for big man Aguinaldo for easy baskets down low. John started to clog the lane to counter which eventually opened the right wing for Mr. Consistent to score. With John reeling, shifty guard Raph Pacheco (16 points) came alive hitting triples and orchestrating drives at the lane to keep them at bay. Ryan Malupa also came up big with 10 points and excellent ground defense to make it a little more difficult for Aguinaldo. No team can take control of the game in the closing moments of regulation as they traded baskets left and right. Pacheco split his free throws late to send the game to overtime, deadlock at 68. In overtime, Mark started off hot as they took a 6 point lead, 79-73. Tan continued to impress as he scored 35 points before fouling out late in the overtime period. Gotonero also came up big all game with 19 points but also followed suit. On John’s side, Pacheco and Ryan Malupa finished the game on the bench with 5 fouls. Both teams dug deep into their roster of players to finish the game. Aguinaldo continued to mark his presence in the paint in overtime finishing with an impressive 24 points. John relied heavily on the smooth offensive plays of Gonzales who finished with a whopping 41 points including a big basket that gave the lead to John, 81-80, with less than a minute remaining in overtime. A missed free throw from Mark was rebounded by John with less than 20 seconds remaining. A technical issue took place with the refs deciding to reset the offensive possession giving John a 1 second shot clock with 5 seconds of the game clock remaining. John committed the turnover as they were unable to get a shot. With 4 seconds remaining, Mark inbounded the ball. In a fumble, a loose ball foul was called against Sanchez with no game clock remaining. Game situation: Quisimundo at the line to win the game. Quisimundo calmly took care of the first free throw ensuring at least another overtime. With all the crowds cheering and jeering for him, the guard showed his clutch gene as he swished the 2nd free throw to award the win to Mark, effectively blemishing the previously pristine record of John. Axcel finished with 4 points but none more important than the last two. Scores: Mark 82 - 35 Ponciano Tan, 24 Ezekiel Aguinaldo, 19 Marlito Gotonero, 4 Axcel Quisimundo, 0 Joey Aguinaldo, 0 Joseph Aguinaldo, 0 Jake Pagatpat John 81 - 41 AC Gonzales, 16 Raph Pacheco, 10 Ryan Malupa, 6 Apollos Aguinaldo, 4 Orly Malupa, 4 Kevin Sanchez, 0 Rey Malupa, 0 Jenzhel Sanchez, 0 Sam Pacheco Fallout from February 22 The win by Mark tied them with Luke at 2-2 with the latter leading by just a single point in the overall quotient system. John stays on top at 3-1. Matthew looks to spoil the party as they are still very much in the mix for the twice to beat advantage. The battle for a twice to beat advantage intensifies. Two teams coming off tough losses are looking to solidify their respective positions in the standings as Luke battles John. Matthew looks to continue their new found winning ways as they clash with Mark who are in high spirits following their monumental victory. Both games will be played on March 1, 2022 at GBBC. As of Feb 15, 2022, after the 1st round:
1. AC Gonzales, 23.67 PPG (John, 3-0) Best Performance: 32 PTS against Luke, Feb. 8, 2022 The current leading scorer of the league continues to torch the nets for the league-leading John team. Gonzales is a smooth operator in the painted area where he scores most of his points. He is the glue guy for John as he holds the fort both offensively and defensively. It is not a surprise that he leads his team to an unblemished record heading to the next round. He exploded for 32 points against Luke to set the bar for most points in the tournament so far. 2. Mario Gayeta, 21.67 PPG (Luke, 2-1) Best Performance: 27 PTS against Matthew, Feb. 5, 2022. Luke’s performance can always be gauged with that of their captain’s and so far, he doesn’t disappoint. Gayeta always shows up in games as one half of the 1-2 punch of the red team along with guard Duga-duga. Luke continues to rely on Gayeta’s consistent mid range jumper for points and his high basketball IQ to win games. This writer cannot differentiate Gayeta’s valuableness with that of Gonzales but right now we are giving Gonzales a narrow edge due to their team records. 3. Ponciano Tan, 23 PPG (Mark, 1-2) Best Performance: 24 PTS against John, Feb. 5, 2022. Tan is the only player in the tournament to score at least 20 in each game. The 2nd leading scorer provides much needed offense for a young Mark team brimming with potential. Aptly dubbed by this writer as Mr. Consistent, you can always expect buckets from the versatile forward. Mark looks to convert these performances from Tan into wins as the 2nd round starts. Tan can look for more help especially down low as Aguinaldo is emerging in that secondary role for Mark. 4. Vic Lardizabal, 20 PPG (Matthew, 0-3) Best Performance: 26 PTS against John, Feb. 15, 2022. The Tank has been a marvel for the tournament. Do not be fooled by Matthew’s record because everyone knows they are capable of winning anytime. The Tank consistently gives his team a chance to win. He does it all as he scores and rebounds for the green team. They are a team to watch out for in the 2nd round if their last game was any indicator. Newcomer Roblo meshed well with Lardizabal as they retooled heading into the 2nd round. Scary hours are ahead for this Matthew team. Other players in consideration: Lloyd Duga-duga, 18.67 PPG (Luke, 2-1) Raph Pacheco, 11.33 PPG (John, 3-0) Lunie Sebial, 10.67 PPG (Matthew, 0-3) Orly Malupa, 10 PPG (John, 3-0) Ezekiel Aguinaldo, 8.33 PPG (Mark, 1-2) /written by: Kevin Sanchez /photos by: Chloe Aguinaldo Standings (after 1st round) Team W L Quotient Margins John 3 0 +27 +12, +13, +2 Luke 2 1 +2 +11, -13, +4 Mark 1 2 -4 -12, +12, -4 Matthew 0 3 -25 -11, -12, -2 John narrowly escapes gritty Matthew GBBC, Feb. 15, 2022. John made key baskets and free throws down the stretch to hold on to a slim victory against a revamped Matthew. John continues to pile up wins as they finish the first round of the PBA tournament on a high note. A revitalized Matthew showed that they are a team to look out for in the second round with new tools at their disposal. Aaron Roblo showed up in his first game in a green uniform as he complimented smoothly into the team’s playing schemes. It was just not enough to emerge victoriously in this back and forth game. John banked on the steady hands of their superstar AC Gonzales who was seconded by big performances from forwards Orly and Ryan Malupa who each scored 14 points. Matthew raced to a 6 point lead in the first half showing off their new found piece that surely caught the black and gold team by surprise. The Tank Vic Lardizabal continues his high scoring ways to lead the green team. Forward Jeff Alquizar had his night cut short by an inadvertent elbow early in the game. Both teams continued to grapple control of the game until the final few minutes. The score continued to be a deadlock as Lardizabal tied the game at 54. Gonzales scored in the right wing to break the deadlock, 56-54. Both teams struggled to score from there on. Quick guard Raph Pacheco fouled out late in the game giving Matthew a great chance to win the game. Free throw misses became the theme for both teams but John converted enough to close out the game. Shifty guard Lunie Sebial had a chance to tie the game with less than 10 seconds remaining but he muffed both free throws. Gonzales finished with 19 points to continue his hot streak. Pacheco added 9 for the winning team. The Tank scored 26 points for Matthew aided by newcomer Roblo with 22 points. Luke showed off their veteran smarts as they outdueled Mark in a nail biter. A 12 round boxing clinic. It is the perfect analogy to the best game of the tournament so far as Luke and Mark ended the 1st round of the PBA tournament with an edge-of-your-seat thriller. As boxing commentators would often say in the 12th round of a slugfest, you start to rely on instinct and muscle memory. Luke displayed veteran fortitude to eke out the win against a young Mark team. Mark came hot out of the gates as they raced to an early 9 point lead that had Luke reeling. Ponciano Tan and Ezekiel Aguinaldo were the inside-outside tandem for the black and orange team. Captain and superstar Mario Gayeta of Luke started the game off the bench opting to coach the team on the sidelines in the early parts of the game. Luke started to score as Gayeta checked in to weather the early storm. Luke finished the 1st half strong to snatch the lead 25-24. In the second half, the teams continued to trade baskets as they wrest control of the game. Luke tightened up their defense in the painted area to somehow limit Ezekiel’s presence inside. Spitfire guard Lloyd Duga-duga struggled to score behind the 3 point line but found ways to help his team in other aspects. He was still able to chuck up two 3 pointers in the game. Mr. Consistent Ponciano Tan continued to score buckets for his team in the 2nd half. As the defense focused on the usual suspects, other players took advantage and seized the opportunity. Romel Galara and Mariano Gayeta each scored 4 points for Luke. Bay Gayeta added 6 points along with some terrific blocks, showing his athleticism. Wingman Axcel Quisimundo scored 6 points for Mark and provided great energy on defense. Do-it-all-guard Marlito Gotonero had his breakout game with 11 points including some beautiful plays to help Mark keep pace in the end game. Down the wire, Gayeta and Duga-duga took over for Luke as they strung together some points to keep Luke in the game. Tan and Aguinaldo kept Mark scoring and slugging. With the score tied at 51 with less than 2 minutes remaining, Luke guard Gabriel Tanyag hit a left wing 3 pointer while fouled to give the lead to Luke. Tanyag completed the huge 4 point play, a rarity. Aguinaldo answered with an inside bucket but missed the and-one free throw. Duga-duga iced the game at the charity stripe with less than 4 seconds remaining to hand the win to Luke, 58-54. Superstar Mario Gayeta finished the game with 19. Duga-duga added 16 for Luke. Tanyag finished with 7 points. Ponciano Tan continues his streak of 20-point games by scoring 23 to lead Mark. Ezekiel Aguinaldo scored 13 to continue the young big man’s scary development as a serviceable center. Gotonero rounded out the 5 players to score double digits in the game. John tightened up their defense late to prevent Luke’s offensive wizardry. An offensive battle ensued as two teams coming off their opening day wins clashed in the first game. A fast paced high scoring game became the theme of the first half as both teams looked to add momentum to their previous win. Spitfire guard Lloyd Duga-duga converted 3 triples in the first half to lead the white and red team with 13 points going to the break. Captain and superstar Mario Gayeta added 10 points in the half for Luke. John relied heavily on the domination of their superstar AC Gonzales inside the paint with 18 first half points. Matthew’s captain and team leader Jun Adille scored his first basket of the season during the first period as he started for the white and green team. The team relied on the sharp shooting of Honorio Gayeta to trim the lead to single digits heading into the final minutes. Gayeta unloaded 2 triples seconded by another triple from Kyle Lardizabal as Matthew showed their grit and grind as they threatened to steal the game away. From that point, Matthew opted to extend the game by challenging the free throw shooting of point guard Gerald Gabriel. Gabriel answered the call as he scored all of his 6 points from the stripe. Mark was spearheaded by Mr. Consistent Ponciano Tan with 22 points but was plagued by his 4 fouls. Big man Ezekiel Aguinaldo scored all of his 8 points in the first half before fouling out in the 2nd half.
